Description

The Crossing is a powerful and moving young adult novel about hope, grief, friendship, courage, and the human stories behind the refugee crisis. Winner of the Costa Children’s Book Award 2021 and named a Sunday Times Children’s Book of the Week, this thought-provoking story follows two teenagers from completely different worlds whose lives are brought together by fate.

Natalie is struggling to cope with the loss of her mother while her brother becomes increasingly consumed by anger and hatred on the streets of Dover. For Natalie, swimming becomes a place of escape from the pain and confusion surrounding her.

Far away, Sammy has fled his home and family in Eritrea in search of safety and the possibility of a better future in Europe. His journey takes him through uncertainty, danger, and an unfamiliar world where his future remains impossible to predict.

When Natalie and Sammy’s lives unexpectedly intersect, an unlikely connection gives them both a sense of hope. Their story explores whether compassion, friendship, and hope can overcome grief, fear, prejudice, and the divisions that separate people.

The Crossing is an emotionally powerful and socially relevant children’s and young adult book that offers readers a human perspective on the refugee experience. With its compelling characters and important themes, it encourages empathy and understanding while delivering a deeply moving story of resilience and hope.
