Hooked

Hooked is a thrilling and unsettling exploration of loneliness, intense female friendship, and the fine line between affection and dangerous obsession in contemporary Japan. In Asako Yuzuki's compelling novel, Hooked centers on Eriko, a successful corporate worker whose life appears completely flawless on the surface, from her devoted parents to her ambitious project introducing the controversial Nile perch to the Japanese market. Beneath her pristine exterior, however, Eriko is crippled by a profound sense of isolation.

Her life shifts when she becomes obsessed with a popular, messy blog written by a housewife named Shōko, whose raw posts about convenience store food and domestic chaos contrast sharply with traditional societal expectations. After tracking Shōko down and striking up a friendship, Eriko finally feels Hooked on a sense of belonging and human connection. Yet, as her admiration spirals into an increasingly possessive and suffocating fixation, her carefully controlled world begins to unravel, raising urgent questions about how far she will go to keep her only true friend.
